Phone Interview Demeanor
In recent years, many hiring managers are conducting phone interviews as a prescreening step. There are several reasons for this step.
1.) The hiring manager wants to know if you have the basic skills and experience relevant to the position.
2.) The hiring manager needs to determine if he / she wants to spend time/ money to interview the candidate face to face.
3.) The manager wants to assess the candidate’s communication skills.
Today I received a resume from a guy who is uniquely qualified for a position I am looking to fill. So naturally I called him to assess his qualifications and to gauge his interest.
The interview lasted exactly two minutes.
This candidate was so dull, so monotonal, lacked energy, lacked passion, and could not tell me what he was looking for. Getting a straight answer was like pulling teeth. He will not get an interview.
My advice is simple. Speak up. Speak clearly. Show some enthusiasm. Show some energy. Be engaging. Laugh a little. If you can’t communicate clearly over the phone, you will give the hiring manager the impression that you will not clearly communicate with customers. Remember- you have about 20 seconds to make a good first impression!
