The Big Medical Companies Are Not Your Best Bet
There are five medical companies that everyone wants to join. I repeat- EVERYONE wants to join. So when these companies post an opening, or a Recruiter calls you about these companies, you can bet that 500 people are applying for these openings as well. So, using the law of averages, what are your chances of landing with ” the BIG FIVE?” Very slim, I’m afraid.
And guess what- in many cases there is no opening! These major companies love to build a candidate pool by interviewing as many candidates as they can. And they subject candidates to 5-7 interviews only to tell the “final candidates” that they have “filled their opening internally.” It is a shame.
I’ve had people turn down interviews with solid companies because they are ” in finals” with one of the Big Five, and then they come back to me two weeks later saying that they lost to an internal candidate.
There are some great medical companies where you can launch your career. Cook Medical, Smith’s Medical, and Smith & Nephew are three examples. These are companies who consistently seek and hire entry level and light medical candidates.
Look, I am by no means discouraging people to apply to the “Big Five.” Landing a position with any of them can result in a rewarding career in medical sales. I’m just saying not to get your hopes up, and not to dismiss potential interviews with smaller companies- you may find yourself on the outside looking in.
