We will be providing suggested answers to common and tough interview questions on a weekly basis.
Question
Give me three reasons why should I hire you?
This question often remains unasked, but it’s always in the back of the interviewer’s mind. Even if this question is not asked, you should find an opportunity to use your prepared response sometime during the interview. But here’s the typical answer I get when I ask this very question during a prep session:
“I am passionate, I am hard working, I never quit, and no one can outperform me!”
Okay, do you really think that a Medical Manager is going to hire you because you claim to be hard working? Everyone works hard. Everyone is passionate, not a quitter, etc. What you’ve given that manager are clichés that every candidate uses.
Try this instead:
“Well, in my current position I have increased annual revenues from $299K to over $3M. In my previous position, I increased sales by over 400% in a four year period. If you are looking for someone who can bring you additional revenues, I am that person!”
Reason #2: ‘”In my current position, I cold called and opened over 150 new accounts, and have achieved over 30 total conversions. And in the previous position, I opened 75 new accounts and increased market share by 60%. If you are looking for someone who can bring you new business I am that person.”
Finally, “I have a history of generating revenues in a short ramp up time. It only took me four months to land three major new accounts, and to increase my territory ranking from #34 to #11. If you are looking for someone who can make an immediate impact, I am your person!”
Give three criteria. Give specifics. Set yourself apart from the other candidates.
Word of caution: Don’t be canned. Be animated to a certain degree and give your response keeping in the flow and discourse of the interview. Use your instincts and personality to sell yourself. Your comments and questions are always encouraged and welcome. Please check back for other updates.
