The Most Placeable Candidate
In the medical recruitment industry, we refer to our top candidates as an MPC, or Most Placeable Candidate. That is not to say that we won’t try and work with everyone, but an MPC is the most attractive candidate in the eyes of our medical client companies. There are five criteria that we use to determine whether or not a candidate is an MPC:
1.) The candidate must have a relevant skill
Obviously a candidate who has a solid background and quantifiable achievements goes to the top of the list. This candidate may or may not have medical sales experience, but he/ she must possess a documented pattern of success, a good track record, and a skill set desirable to our medical clients. The pre-eminent word is relevant. We simply cannot place a high school teacher in the role of cardiac surgery sales rep.
2.) The candidate must have realistic expectations
A one year out of school business to business sales representative looking for a VP of Sales position is not realistic. Nor is a person currently making $80K looking for no less than $300K. The ideal candidate has expectations in line with what the market offers and is realistic about what he / she is looking for.
3.) The candidate is ready to make a change and available to interview
Not next year, not in six months, but ready to make a move now- especially if the right opportunity presents itself. Recruiters do not want to work with tire kickers. We want to work with people who can make themselves available and ready to interview. If you really want to turn a recruiter off, just say, “I am not really looking, I just want to see what is out there.” I can assure you that your resume will go to the bottom of the pile.
4.) The candidate is reference checkable
If a candidate cannot provide 2-3 references (ex manager, co worker, or customer) they are not an MPC
5.) The candidate must show respect for the Recruiter
That means returning phone calls, e-mails or texts in a timely manner, taking advice from the recruiter, making yourself available for pre-interview screening and post interview downloads, and transparent communications on a regular basis.
Now keep in mind that not everyone is an MPC. But that DOES NOT MEAN that you are not placeable, nor does it mean that you are not a solid candidate. We work with as many candidates as we can- even if they are not an MPC. And the criteria listed above is purely subjective. But the above criteria is merely a barometer to determine the amount of time and energy we recruiters will expend as we make cold calls on behalf of the candidate.
